Arbor Chat

In July 2020, PNW-ISA rolled out its latest education program, Arbor Chat. This webinar series features topics led by industry professionals who are testing theories, challenging practices, sharing research or questioning controversial methods while savoring their favorite cup of Joe. Each offering will last 30-minutes to one hour in length although some topics may warrant additional time. We encourage members to participate in this new forum that will not only expand your arboriculture knowledge but allow you to gain CEU’s too!

New York City’s natural history is reflected in some of its oldest living organisms: its trees. We refer to those trees that have endured the pressures of human development— and have the scars to show for it—as veteran trees. Some of the veteran trees at Green-Wood date back to the Cemetery’s founding in 1838 or earlier and are remnants of the legacy of Brooklyn’s old-growth forests. These specimens require a unique approach to tree care, one that seeks to consider a tree’s natural aging processes. Join world-class arborist and veteran tree care specialist Philip Kelley and Green-Wood’s Director of Horticulture Joseph Charap for a conversation on how and why we seek to preserve our veteran trees.

Joseph Charap is Green-Wood’s Director of Horticulture and Curator. At Green-Wood since 2015, Joseph is responsible for managing the arboretum’s living collections, horticulture operations, and the research and collaborative initiatives related to its collection. A certified arborist, he graduated from the New York Botanical Garden School of Professional Horticulture and holds a Master’s degree in English literature from Brooklyn College.

Phillip Kelley is a Safety Team Leader for Wright Tree Service and Owner and Lead Instructor of Rowen Tree Training in Washington State. He has over 25 years of experience in the industry and is a past president of the Georgia Arborist Association, judge for the ISA North American Tree Climbing Championship and ISA Aerial Rescue International Tree Climbing Championship, and Certified Arborist since 2000.
