Environmental Technician
(Temporary Opportunity)

This is technical field and office work, related to the City’s arboricultural practices and procedures, including the administration of Surrey’s Tree preservation By-law and office and field review of the following: Tree Cutting Permit Applications, Arborist Reports, Tree Protection Measures, Replacement Tree Plantings and Landscape Installations. The incumbent reports to the Trees and Landscape Manager, Building Division

Typical duties include: reviewing arborists’ reports; reviewing tree cutting permit applications; inspecting tree protection recommendations and installations prior to demolition and construction; reviews By-law Enforcement Officers’ reports of illegal tree cutting. As well, reviewing restoration proposals for environmentally sensitive areas may be required. The position will require regular contact with developers, builders, homeowners and the general public to discuss tree-related issues. Performs other related duties as required.

The successful candidate will possess a University Degree or Diploma in Forestry Arboriculture or Horticulture or a related field from an accredited post-secondary institution. A minimum of 3 years experience in arboriculture-related work, including experience in hazard tree assessment is required and a valid BC driver’s license and the use of the incumbents own vehicle for site visits is a must. The incumbent will be accredited or be eligible for accreditation with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

Urban Forestry Technician - Full-time (One-year term)

As the Planning and Development team's specialist in all matters pertaining to trees, you will apply considerable independent judgment and initiative in performing technical regulatory, inspection and enforcement work. You will be responsible for reviewing development plans, landscape plans and arborist reports. You will also respond to tree-related concerns from the public and other departments, discuss issues on tree retention/replacement and explain and monitor adherence to the City's environmental policies.

University graduation in an arboriculture-related program or equivalent is required. Eligibility or certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arborists is an asset. Along with excellent oral and written communication skills, you should have experience in and knowledge of:

  • applicable policies, procedures and by-laws
  • arboricultural principles, practices and techniques
  • local tree species, diseases and pests.

Salary range: $27.27 - $32.17 per hour.

Additional Information :  

  • This position entails frequent (up to 80% of time) exposure to all outdoor conditions from urban to wilderness settings.
  • Some exposure to wild animals and dogs.
  • Extensive driving in a full range of conditions is required.
  • May use helicopters in inspection work.
  • Training related to vegetation management plan development, hazard tree assessment, environmental issues related to vegetation management, public relations and contract administration is desirable.
  • Experience and certification in herbicide application is a requirement.
  • This is a temporary one year position in Nanaimo, BC.

Start Date : ASAP

Job Length : Full-time (40 to 50 Hours/Week). This job is primarily Monday through Friday and with occasional Saturdays.

Job Description :

  1. Urban Forestry Services, Inc. provides arboricultural services throughout the Puget Sound region. In addition, it’s partner company, Urban Forest Nursery, Inc. grows quality street and landscape trees from its Mount Vernon, Washington location for the wholesale landscape industry.
  2. UFS, Inc. is on contract to provide landscape installation monitoring and arboricultural consulting services throughout the construction of Snoqualmie Ridge. You will work with our staff onsite to provide arboricultural services in Snoqualmie Ridge. You will read, understand, and potentially review landscape construction drawings. You will read and understand City Codes regarding Landscape Municipal Codes. You will apply and monitor landscape and civil specifications and codes related to plantings and other landscape activities while onsite.
  3. You will inspect, accept, or reject plant material; primarily trees for street tree and landscape planting.
  4. You will monitor soil preparation in street tree rootways, plant handling, and installation as specified.
  5. You will document areas of concern regarding existing plant material and installation practices.
  6. You will communicate with UFS, Inc staff on a daily basis as to the progress of landscape installation.
  7. You will keep daily and weekly records of activities onsite.
  8. You will communicate with City staff and maintenance crews as needed.
  9. If necessary, you will be available to provide similar services at other locations in the Puget Sound region.

Job Requirements :

  1. ISA Certification or working towards Certification within one year.
  2. Minimum 2 years background in horticulture, arboriculture, or related field.
  3. Minimum 2 years education in horticulture, arboriculture, or related field.
  4. Able to understand written and graphic specifications on required plant material and installation.

Transmission Utility Forester

Location:  Portland, OR  

Description of Duties:             

·        Identify needed tree work on a 2,000 mile electrical transmission system.  This includes identification of hazard trees and other normal cyclic tree and brush maintenance.

  • Lay out work and obtain customer permission for tree removal, herbicide work, brush disposal, or access when necessary.
  • Assist in preparing bid packages for work
  • Coordinate, inspect and audit work progress, quality control, and verify completion of work.
  • Assists in other aspects of public relations, education, and contractor compliance.
  • Must have excellent communications skills to deal with the public and utility foresters.
  • Must be ambitious and able to work independently, and walk in difficult terrain.
  • Must have, or attain ISA Certified Arborist certification as soon as possible.

Assignment Duration:  2 years with expected contract renewal.

Education/Work Experience:  BS or AS in forestry, horticulture, or other natural resource field preferred, or a Certified Arborist with utility experience, or a professional with significant utility or green industry experience.  Good tree identification, communications and public relations skills are essential.      

Compensation:    Depends on Qualifications, Education & Experience.  

Benefits:  WFCI will pay (With 90 day exclusionary period):

  • 60% of the medical coverage plan (includes vision) for  the employee,
  • 401(k) pension plan (Fidelity Advisor Fund),
