Certified Tree Worker Climber Specialist

This credential provides assurance that the tree worker has the knowledge and experience to safely and correctly perform pruning and other tree care. Certified Tree Workers with a climbing specialty have demonstrated knowledge in major aspects of tree care including pruning, tree removal, and cabling and bracing practices, in addition to climbing, equipment and rigging safety. This professional designation supports continuing education in order to improve technical competence and safety, as well as creating incentives to continue professional development.

Candidates for this credential must have a minimum of 18 months experience professionally climbing trees in a safe and efficient manner to perform tree care. Candidates must also show valid proof of training in aerial rescue, CPR, and First Aid. Certification applicants must pass both a written examination of tree knowledge and a skills exam conducted by trained tree climbing evaluators.

Participants in ISA international or regional chapter Tree Climbing Championships may waive the work climb portion of the skills exam for this certification, providing that all other requirements are met. Those who choose to take advantage of this option must submit a Skills Exam Waiver Form signed by an ISA certified Tree Worker Evaluator with the Application Form for the Tree Worker/Climber Specialist Examination.

The ISA Certified Tree Worker/Climbing Specialist Handbook contains more details about the program, including requirements to become certified, how to maintain certification, and an examination application form. The Handbook is also available in Spanish. Completed applications must be received by the ISA at least twelve business days prior to the examination date. First-time applicants may submit the Certification Application online. More information about becoming certified may be found here.
