This credential provides assurance that the tree worker has the knowledge and experience to safely and correctly perform pruning and other tree care through the use of aerial lift equipment. Certified Tree Workers with an aerial lift specialty have demonstrated knowledge in major aspects of tree care including pruning, tree removal, and cabling and bracing practices, in addition to equipment operation and safety. This professional designation supports continuing education in order to improve technical competence and safety, as well as creating incentives to continue professional development.
Candidates for this credential must have a minimum of 18 months of arboricultural experience that includes six months of experience in the operation of aerial lift equipment. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of equipment, ability to operate an aerial lift, safe and effective maneuvering in and around a tree, knowledge of frequently used knots, and inspection of work gear, all with a high regard for safety. The applicant must also show valid proof of training in CPR and First Aid. Certification applicants must pass both a written examination of tree knowledge and a skills exam conducted by trained evaluators.

Recertification
The ISA Certified Tree Worker/Aerial Lift Specialist designation is valid for three years. Fifteen continuing education units (CEUs) must be acquired by the end of the three-year period in order to maintain the certification. A recertification fee must also be paid.
