This certification provides the public and those in government with a means to identify tree care professionals who have demonstrated a thorough knowledge of tree care practices and ethical work practices through participation in a professional testing and education program. This level of certification is also designed to support continuing education in order to improve technical competency and create incentives to continue professional development.
Basic requirements to become certified include a minimum of three years of full-time experience in arboriculture. Acceptable experience includes knowledge of and experience with proper planting, fertilization, and pruning practices; diagnosis and treatment of tree problems; and cabling and bracing, climbing, or other services directly related to arboriculture. The eligibility requirements may also be satisfied by a two-year degree in arboriculture in conjunction with two years of practical experience; OR a four-year degree in a related field in conjunction with one year of practical experience. If you are self- employed or own your own company, you will be required to submit three letters of reference with your application.
The ISA Certified Arborist Handbook contains more details about the program, including requirements to become certified, how to maintain certification, and an examination application form. The Handbook is also available in Spanish. Completed applications must be received by the ISA at least two weeks prior to the examination date. First-time applicants may submit the Certification Application online. More information about becoming certified may be found here.
Recertification
The ISA Certified Arborist designation is valid for three years. Thirty continuing education units (CEUs) must be acquired by the end of the three-year period in order to maintain the certification. A recertification fee must also be paid. Learn more about maintaining certification here.
The ISA Certification Program does not discriminate in determining eligibility on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law.
