October 15, 9:00 am-12:15 pm: Tree Diseases: Above & Below Ground
Start off with a sudden oak death update and description of a proposed new project to “phish for phytophthora” in local streams. You’ll also learn about foliage diseases, branch cankers and root rots, as well as resources for information on managing these pests. Speakers include Dr. Marianne Elliott, WSU – Puyallup and Amy Kroll, Plant Pathologist with the Department of Natural Resources.
This seminar will include lecture, samples and field diagnosis.
October 15, 1:00 am-4:15 pm: Bark Beetles and Wood Borers
Wood boring insects have become increasingly present in the Puget Sound area. Through lecture, samples and field diagnosis, you will learn about both native and exotic species in this seminar. Speakers include Dr. Robert Gara, University of Washington Professor of Forestry and international consultant on forest pests, and Sharon Collman, WSU Snohomish County Extension Educator.
November 12, 9:00 am-12:15 pm: Trees for Every Site and Season
Landscape professionals regularly consider site-specific needs when selecting trees for planting. Careful tree selection guarantees long term success, whether the site is a small ornamental garden or an urban streetscape. This seminar will include presentations on new varieties of trees for urban landscaping by Jim Barborinas, ISA Certified Arborist and owner of Urban Forestry Services, Inc., great Japanese maples by Frank Byles, retired from F. Byles Nursery and collector of Japanese maples, and ornamental trees for smaller gardens by Bess Bronstein, ISA Certified Arborist and Edmonds Community College instructor.
November 12, 1:00 pm-4:15 pm: Healthy Roots: Where Successful Tree Planting Begins
Learn to recognize healthy root systems as well as how to treat common root problems found in landscapes. Ray Maleike, Professor Emeritus, WSU Puyallup will discuss current research on root development, common root problem, as well as diagnosing root problems in the landscape. Bess Bronstein, ISA Certified Arborist, and Sharon Collman, WSU Snohomish Extension, will discuss planting depth issues and best planting practices, and will demonstrate root washing as well as current tree planting practices. Come prepared for outdoor weather conditions.
