Urban
Forestry: A Tool for
Sustainable
Communities
The Annual Oregon Urban Forest Conference
World Forestry
Center, Portland, Oregon
"Sustainability" is a
hot topic in city circles today. Many cities are looking for ways they
can become more sustainable - acting in ways that balance economic,
environmental, and social concerns. There is perhaps no greater
sustainability endeavor that cities can undertake than actively managing
their urban forests. The trees in our communities are part of what makes
our neighborhoods livable - and those towns that manage their urban
forests well reap demonstrable economic, environmental, and social
benefits. Big picture issues, like addressing climate change, reducing
'carbon footprints,' and developing sensibly while retaining green
infrastructure, are all interrelated challenges facing Oregon cities. I
invite you to join us as we look at these sustainability issues at the
eighth annual Oregon Urban and Community Forestry Conference, on June 5,
2008 at the World Forestry Center in Portland.

The key to giving a tree a healthy start in the planting site is
using good planting procedures. Applying proper tree planting techniques and
early care procedures can improve survival chances and accelerate establishment.
Many tree planting traditions have been passed down through generations in the
landscape and arboriculture industry. While some of these techniques are still
recommended today, others have been changed to reflect current research and
technology. This class provides useful scientific information on installing and
establishing trees so they thrive in the landscape.
Pruning is the most common maintenance procedure done to a tree.
It is often desirable or necessary to prune a tree to remove dead branches,
improve tree structure, enhance vigor or maintain safety. Proper pruning is very
beneficial. Improper pruning can be damaging to the tree and to your bottom
line! This class provides the latest research-backed information on pruning
trees to achieve useful, productive healthy longevity.
These classes will benefit arborists, tree care businesses,
foresters, parks, public works and golf course employees, groundskeepers,
landscape contractors, nursery retailers, and others responsible for tree
management.
ISA CEUs and Oregon Landscape Construction Professional CEHs
are pending approval.
CoSponsors: Pacific Northwest ISA / Oregon Department of
Forestry / City of Redmond
Dress appropriately for outdoor conditions.
Class lectures are being held at an outdoor covered park pavilion. Lunch is on

Root Disease Workshop
(Class limit: 40; Register now!)
Bonney Lake, WA - WSU
Demonstration Forest
Instructors: Ken Russell
and Dennis Tompkins
9 AM to 1 PM
(registration begins at 8:30 AM)
To
REGISTER
The WSU Demonstration Forest experienced severe blowdown from
the February 2006 windstorm because of extensive laminated root rot. This
“living laboratory” presents a rare opportunity to learn about the disease and
develop skills for identifying root problems. It will be a repeat of the
well-received workshop presented last August.
Ken Russell, Forest Pathologist, and Dennis Tompkins, ISA
Certified Arborist, will be the primary instructors. Russell was retained by WSU
to mark the forest for logging the laminated root disease infection centers. The
logging was nearly completed prior to the December 2006 storm. Tompkins
initiated a research project with Russell with the objectives to 1) determine if
crown appearance could be an indicator of the disease and 2) evaluate the
effectiveness of cutting buffer trees around infection centers to reduce spread
of the disease.
While the severe windstorms of February and December 2006 caused
tremendous property damage, they also presented a unique research and
educational opportunity at the WSU Demonstration Forest. This workshop is
designed to provide that opportunity to arborists, tree services, and public
employees.
Workshop Setting &
Tools
This workshop will be
held outdoors. Please dress appropriately for weather and field work. The
lecture portion of the workshop and the field work will be in a forested area.
Some seating will be available. You are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.
Equipment Recommended:
1) Small Hand Ax
2) Hand Lens (10x or
higher) You can purchase a hand lens on the registration form for an additional
$25.
3) Lawn Chair (some

applied for ISA Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and recertification credits
for pesticide licenses.
Directions & Parking

held at the Washington State University Demonstration Forest, Bonney Lake,
Washington. Directions will be sent with registration confirmation. Due to
limited parking, the workshop is limited 40 attendees. No lunch is provided.

ANNOUNCING
A NEW COURSE OFFERING - ONLY FROM THE PNW-ISA!
Tree Risk Assessment
in Urban Areas and the Urban/Rural Interface
This
course was developed in consultation with the Workers’ Compensation Board of
British Columbia (WCB), British Columbia Hydro, Wildlife and Danger Tree
Committee of British Columbia, and numerous reviewers around North America.
The course is administered by the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the
International Society of Arboriculture (PNW-ISA).
The need for the course was defined in British
Columbia by a tree-caused fatality in 2000 which helped WCB focus attention on
worker safety on golf courses and in urban areas. PNW-ISA approached WCB to
explore ways to design and implement a training course for the assessment of
trees in urban areas and in the urban/rural interface areas. These discussions
resulted in a project, funded by WCB, PNW-ISA, and BC Hydro,
to develop a completely new course and accreditation. The course design work
was undertaken by Dr. Julian Dunster of Dunster & Associates Ltd.
The effort involved several years of extensive research, testing, and review
of the materials. In the summer of
2004, WorkSafe BC recognized the course and credential as an accepted industry
standard in British Columbia. After a successful 2005 course launch in British
Columbia, the course is now being offered in the Pacific Northwest.
